Every application date — as amended by the Digital Omnibus, with superseded dates struck through, never deleted. The Commission can pull high-risk dates earlier if it confirms standards and tools are ready; Dec 2027 / Aug 2028 are backstops.

AUG 1, 2024

The AI Act enters into force IN FORCE

Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 published; the staggered application clock starts.

FEB 2, 2025

Prohibitions + AI literacy IN FORCE

Art. 5 banned practices apply; providers and deployers must ensure staff AI literacy (Art. 4).

AUG 2, 2025

GPAI obligations + governance IN FORCE

Model duties (Art. 53/55) apply to new models; AI Office and AI Board operational; Member State authority designation due — many missed it.

AUG 2, 2026

Transparency + enforcement powers NEXT

Art. 50 disclosure and labelling apply, including machine-readable marking for new generative systems. GPAI enforcement powers begin. Penalties framework live. NOT deferred by the Omnibus.

DEC 2, 2026

Legacy marking + new prohibition NEW — OMNIBUS

Art. 50(2) marking applies to systems already on the market before Aug 2 (transition cut 6→3 months). New Art. 5 ban on NCII/CSAM-generating systems takes effect.

AUG 2, 2027

Sandboxes, delegated acts, legacy GPAI UPCOMING

National regulatory sandboxes due (moved from 2026); Annex I sectoral delegated acts due; GPAI models placed before Aug 2, 2025 must comply.

DEC 2, 2027

High-risk obligations — Annex III MOVED +16 MO

Full Chapter III applies to stand-alone high-risk systems: risk management, data governance, documentation, oversight, conformity assessment, registration. Backstop date — could come earlier by Commission decision.

AUG 2, 2028

High-risk obligations — Annex I MOVED +12 MO

Chapter III applies to AI embedded as safety components in regulated products: medical devices, vehicles, toys, lifts. Machinery now handled under its own Regulation.

2029–2031

Reviews and legacy sweeps HORIZON

Commission evaluation cycles; high-risk systems placed before the application dates fall in scope on substantial modification, public-authority legacy systems by 2030.
